Thoughts for a New year!

A New Year is soon upon us! How time flies away from us, slippier than an eel and as substantial as mist. Do you plan on making any resolutions? I try, but on the whole I prefer to make a goal that I can work towards rather than some rash promise made in the heat of the moment.

One of my goals is to do more journaling in my layouts, even if these layouts are just for my eyes or those of my family! I have come to realise that I have nothing written down from my own parents and only snippets of stories remembered from my long gone grandparents. I want to pass on something tangible to my children, not for now, but in years to come.

On that note, here are some New Year quotes and sayings to think over and maybe even scrap your layouts and other projects with these in mind.

Good resolutions are simply checks that men draw on a bank where they have no account. Oscar Wilde

Many people look forward to the New Year for a new start on old habits. Unknown

A New Year's resolution is something that goes in one Year and out the other. Unknown

Be always at war with your vices, at peace with your neighbors and let each new year find you a better man. Benjamin Franklin

Year's end is neither an end nor a beginning but a going on, with all the wisdom that experience can instill in us. Hal Borland

Cheers to a New Year and another chance for us to get it right. Oprah Winfrey

We will open the book. Its pages are blank. We are going to put words on them ourselves. The book is called Opportunity and its first chapter is New Year's Day. Edith Lovejoy Pierce

New year, same goal. Joe King

Let this coming year be better than all the others. Vow to do some of the things you've always wanted to do but couldn't find the time. Call up a forgotten friend. Drop an old grudge, and replace it with some pleasant memories. Vow not to make a promise you don't think you can keep. Walk tall, and smile more. You'll look ten years younger. Don't be afraid to say, 'I love you'. Say it again. They are the sweetest words in the world. Ann Landers

Look not mournfully into the past. It comes not back again. Wisely improve the present. It is thine. Go forth to meet the shadowy future, without fear, and with a manly heart. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

Finally, the last freebie of 2008 from me and very appropriate it is to, if you are going to record your resolutions or as in my case to do more journaling! Some star shaped journal mats.

You can get them here for a while!

I hope you and yours have a very safe and Happy New Year!

Need A Little Dough- Re- Mi After The Holidays?

As many scrappers know already there are hundreds if not thousands of beautiful patterned papers available to us. Naked & Angry has provided an opportunity to turn any of your own pattern designs into cash!

From the Naked and Angry Site;
How it works Anyone can come to Naked & Angry and submit a pattern design to be voted on by other Naked & Angry users. The design will be scored for 14 days at which time it will be given a final score. The highest scoring designs will be manufactured and products will be created inspired by the patterns. The winners will receive a $750 cash prize and 1 free Naked & Angry item. Who created it Naked & Angry was created by a team of web designers and developers called skinnyCorp. skinnyCorp also created the community-driven Threadless.com which invites designers to submit tee shirt designs to be scored by the Threadless community. The winning designs are printed and sold from the site. Naked & Angry is an extension of Threadless.com - one which focuses on higher quality products through the more subtle pattern approach. What it hopes to become Naked & Angry aims to manufacture products and garments created from winning pattern designs ranging from ties to tops to pillows to belts to socks to sweaters to wallpaper. The goal is to choose five winning patterns every season to create 5-15 various items.

From what I understand you must design in either Photoshop or Illustrator to be considered. More information available and Naked and Angry's website. Good Luck!

a gift for you

I have been a totally bad blogger! So sorry! Can I make it up to you with a little gift?

We have some gals that are brand new to digi scrapping. They are unwrapping those Elements programs and looking at them all puzzled. To help them out with an easy first project, I put together a layered template with a few glittery elements in a nice basic silver.

Click on the photo for a quick zip on over to the store to grab it. It is in the dollar spot, but is free with the code: ibelieve until Christmas. I hope you enjoy!

If you are a brand new digi friend who is looking for some help using this or anything else, pop on over to our boards and give a shout. You may find what you need, but if not, someone is happy to help!

Happy Holidays!

Christmas Thoughts

Well Christmas is soon upon us so here are some thoughts of Christmas to share and maybe scrap:

Christmas is tenderness for the past, courage for the present, hope for the future. It is a fervent wish that every cup may overflow with blessings rich and eternal, and that every path may lead to peace. Agnes M Pharo.

I will honor Christmas in my heart, and try to keep it all the year. Charles Dickens.

I wish we could put up some of the Christmas spirit in jars and open a jar of it every month. Harlan Miller.

Christmas gift suggestions:
To your enemy, forgiveness. To an opponent, tolerance. To a friend, your heart. To a customer, service. To all, charity. To every child, a good example. To yourself, respect. Oren Arnold.

Christmas! 'Tis the season for kindling the fire of hospitality in the hall, the genial fire of charity in the heart. Washington Irving.

The best of all gifts around any Christmas tree: the presence of a happy family all wrapped up in each other. Burton Hillis.

May Peace be your gift at Christmas and your blessing all year through! Unknown.

Christmas is forever, not for just one day,for loving, sharing, giving, are not to put away like bells and lights and tinsel, in some box upon a shelf. The good you do for others is good you do yourself... Norman Wesley Brooks.

May the spirit of Christmas bring you peace,The gladness of Christmas give you hope,The warmth of Christmas grant you love. Unknown.

Gifts of time and love are surely the basic ingredients of a truly merry Christmas. Peg Bracken.

It is the personal thoughtfulness, the warm human awareness, the reaching out of the self to one's fellow man that makes giving worthy of the Christmas spirit. Isabel Currier.

As long as we know in our hearts what Christmas ought to be, Christmas is. Eric Sevareid.

I hope you are all going to have a Happy Christmas and a Peaceful New Year.

Shopping: The Hazards of Boredom

For all the guys who ever get dragged round the supermarket against their will and perhaps some of the girls, should try a few of these too - may liven things up. Proof of what can happen if a wife or girlfriend drags her husband or boyfriend along shopping.

This letter was recently sent by Head Office to a customer in Wigan: Dear Mrs. Cater, While we thank you for your valued custom and use of the our supermarket Loyalty Card, the Manager of our store in Wigan is considering banning you and your family from shopping with us, unless your husband stops his antics. Below is a list of offences over the past few months all verified by our surveillance cameras:
1. June 15: Took 24 boxes of condoms and randomly put them in people's trolleys when they weren't looking.
2. July 2: Set all the alarm clocks in House Wares to go off at 5-minute intervals.
3. July 7: Made a trail of tomato juice on the floor leading to feminine products aisle.
4. July 19: Walked up to an employee and told her in an official tone, 'Code 3' in House Wares..... and watched what happened.
5. August 14: Moved a 'CAUTION - WET FLOOR' sign to a carpeted area.
6. September 15: Set up a tent in the outdoor clothing department and told shoppers he'd invite them in if they would bring sausages and a Calor gas stove.
7. September 23: When the Deputy Manager asked if she could help him, he began to cry and asked, 'Why can't you people just leave me alone?'
8. October 4: Looked right into the security camera; used it as a mirror, picked his nose, and ate it.
9. November 10: While appearing to be choosing kitchen knives in the House Wares aisle asked an assistant if he knew where the antidepressants were situated.
10. December 3: Darted around the store suspiciously, loudly humming the theme tune from 'Mission Impossible'
11. December 6: In the kitchenware aisle, practiced the 'Madonna look' using different size funnels.
12. December 18: Hid in a clothing rack and when people browsed, yelled 'PICK ME, PICK ME!' 13. December 21: When an announcement came over the loud speaker, assumed the fetal position and screamed 'NO! NO! It's those voices again.' And; last, but not least:
14. December 23: Went into a fitting room, shut the door, waited a while; then yelled, very loudly, 'There is no toilet paper in here.'

Sew Good

Really there are blogs to cover just about every subject under the sun and stars these days. If you like to see something different from the man in the street's viewpoint then read a blog. I have found loads of interesting stuff, random factoids and information that COULD be really useful (if only I had the time) From my stash of fascinating blogs, I thought I would preview a couple here for you.

Like sewing? This is one for you then. Free pattern for a cute (linux) penguin. In fact a few patterns of said penguin, delight any small person with one of these and you are bound to make more than one friend for life. the Penguin Project is the place to find these

Then if you like dressmaking and other larger sewing projects, snip aling to Burdastyle.com where you can download fullsize patterns and instructions for various garments. Great fun to look at , I havent tried any of the patterns yet although I have downloaded a few for trial.

If you want to handmake gifts then Whitesewing.com has loads of gift ideas and patterns in easy to download and read ofline pdf format. I particularly like the recycled jeans otganiser and the scented padded clothes hangers.More of these kind of patterns for free can be found at craftandfabriclinks.com. Loads of cute patterns for all kind of bits that you can make from bits of leftover fabric you just hate to throw away.

Being Thankful means......

I AM THANKFUL:
FOR THE WIFE
WHO SAYS IT'S HOT DOGS TONIGHT,
BECAUSE SHE IS HOME WITH ME,
AND NOT OUT WITH SOMEONE ELSE.

FOR THE HUSBAND
WHO IS ON THE SOFA
BEING A COUCH POTATO,
BECAUSE HE IS HOME WITH ME
AND NOT OUT AT THE BARS.

FOR THE TEENAGER
WHO IS COMPLAINING ABOUT DOING DISHES
BECAUSE IT MEANS SHE IS AT HOME,
NOT ON THE STREETS.
FOR THE TAXES I PAY
BECAUSE IT MEANS
I AM EMPLOYED .

FOR THE MESS TO CLEAN AFTER A PARTY
BECAUSE IT MEANS I HAVE
BEEN SURROUNDED BY FRIENDS.

FOR THE CLOTHES THAT FIT A LITTLE TOO SNUG
BECAUSE IT MEANS
I HAVE ENOUGH TO EAT.

FOR MY SHADOW THAT WATCHES ME WORK
BECAUSE IT MEANS
I AM OUT IN THE SUNSHINE

FOR A LAWN THAT NEEDS MOWING,
WINDOWS THAT NEED CLEANING,
AND GUTTERS THAT NEED FIXING
BECAUSE IT MEANS I HAVE A HOME

FOR ALL THE COMPLAINING
I HEAR ABOUT THE GOVERNMENT
BECAUSE IT MEANS
WE HAVE FREEDOM OF SPEECH. ..

FOR THE PARKING SPOT
I FIND AT THE FAR END OF THE PARKING LOT
BECAUSE IT MEANS I AM CAPABLE OF WALKING
AND I HAVE BEEN BLESSED WITH TRANSPORTATION .

FOR MY HUGE HEATING BILL
BECAUSE IT MEANS
I AM WARM.

FOR THE LADY BEHIND ME IN CHURCH
WHO SINGS OFF KEY
BECAUSE IT MEANS I CAN HEAR.

FOR THE PILE OF LAUNDRY AND IRONING
BECAUSE IT MEANS I HAVE CLOTHES TO WEAR.

FOR WEARINESS AND ACHING MUSCLES
AT THE END OF THE DAY
BECAUSE IT MEANS I HAVE BEEN
CAP ABLE OF WORKING HARD.

FOR THE ALARM THAT GOES OFF
IN THE EARLY MORNING HOURS
BECAUSE IT MEANS I AM ALIVE.

FOR THE crazy people I work with
BECAUSE they make work interesting and fun!

Falling Leaves

Oops! What bad bloggers we have been recently.Holidays, illness and just plain laziness I think. There has been much talk on the Streets recently, how mojo is missing from our creative sisters. People are doing anything but scrapping - even cleaning!

So to help get us all back on track and to prepare for the welcome return of our monthly crop this weekend (challenges are posted throughout the weekend and you can win scrappy prizes paper or digital) here are some seasonal quotes.

....Albert Camus
No Spring nor Summer Beauty hath such grace As I have seen in one Autumnal face.
....John Donne
Delicious autumn! My very soul is wedded to it, and if I were a bird I would fly about the earth seeking the successive autumns.
....George Eliot

Winter is an etching, spring a watercolor, summer an oil painting and autumn a mosaic of them all.
....Stanley Horowitz
For man, autumn is a time of harvest, of gathering together. For nature, it is a time of sowing, of scattering abroad.
....Edwin Way Teale
Listen! the wind is rising, and the air is wild with leaves,
We have had our summer evenings, now for October eves!
....Humbert Wolfe

Come said the wind to the leaves one day,
Come o're the meadows and we will play.
Put on your dresses scarlet and gold,
For summer is gone and the days grow cold.

Just right to grace your LO's this autumn.

Get the Skinny

On skins. What are skins? Vinyl covers for your laptop, mp3 player, or cell phone. You can buy a variety of them, but what fun would that be? More fun is making your own!

Still, there are tons out there for sale if you want premade. Here are a couple of laptop covers that caught my eye:

Laptop covers run $15-30, cell phone skins from $10-25. Do you have some people on your Christmas list who you were struggling to find something inexpensive, yet personal? Me, too! I am off to make some skins and mark them off my list!

Here are a few companies offering skins:

Photoshop In A Browser?

Before you spend any money on PSP, PSE, PS CS, and would like to try your hand at creating digital art, why not start with SUMO Paint. Sumo is one of the new "Web 2.0" web based applications. It's a very close clone to Photoshop but without the built in bloat. It's being touted as the most advanced online image editing software around and it's not just for correcting "red eye". It actually has an easy-to-learn interface and Photoshop users will love the familiarity of it. Be sure your browser is up to date with Adobe Flash as SUMO is a Flash based application, meaning it will open in your browser. I have personally tested SUMO Paint in Opera v. 9.52, Internet Explorer v. 7.0, and Firefox v. 3.03 and it worked without a hitch. Nothing to download and install and it's FREE!

Sumo's features include;
  • 1. Shape tools
  • 2. Layers with blending modes.
  • 3. Brush Tool- settings for size, opacity, scatter, random rotate, and gravity.
  • 4. Ink tool-Creates realistic ink impressions with options for "ink wetness" look.
  • 5. Text tool
  • 6. Eraser tool
  • 7. Filters
  • 8. Gradient tool
  • 9. Gravity for Vectors-similar to Photoshops Pen tool.
  • 10. Shape Trails-Creates ghost trails for the shape given, creating an interesting and cool effect. Shape trails are available in Rectangle, Circle, Pie, Star, Round Star and Blade Star.
  • 11. Custom Shape Tool-The SUMO Paint custom shape tool lets you draw your own custom shapes and fills the shape when the mouse button is released.
  • 12. Symmetry tool-allows you to draw some intricate mandala-like drawings very quickly.
  • 13. Transform tool
  • 14. Lasso tool
  • 15. Smudge tool
  • 16. Blur tool
  • 17. Line tool
  • 18. Curve tool
  • 19. Zoom tool
  • 20. Selection Modify
  • 21. Color Picker
  • 22. Swatches
  • 23. Saving Images with multiple layers
  • 24. Select Pixels
  • 25. SUMO paint start view
  • 26. Support for Cool Iris 3D Gallery-Browser Plugin, optional.
Having not read any tutorials prior to trying SUMO, I found the import/export feature a big surprise!

If you'd like to join the SUMO community, look under File, there's a login/register option for free membership. It's another great feature for uploading your art into your own online gallery and unlike other photo apps it doesn't have hooks into social sharing sites like Flickr and Facebook.

SUMO Paint is currently in beta, but the gold release of the web-based application is expected later in the fall. SUMO Paint is being offered by Finnish-based Snap Group Ltd.
Ready to try it? Click on this link and off you go! Have fun playing with SUMO!

When you are not scrapping . . .

How do you spend your time? Other than thinking about scrapping, shopping for scrapping, or taking pictures to scrap, of course. I am a reader. I adore starting a new book on a Friday night when I can stay up late reading, then sleep a bit, then stay in bed on Saturday and read some more. Ahhhh, that is heaven for me.

Recently my ScrapStreet sisters shared a new addiction: The Twilight Books. Ok, so I know that many of you have probably read them as they were being written, but somehow we missed the initial publishing. However, we are making up for it now. We have special room with tons of threads discussing them all. Fun questions, interesting observations, and a giggle or three shared between friends.

I am last to the party and a bit scared to start. See, I am right in the middle of a heavy travel schedule for my hubby. Will have him home 4 days this month. Single mom is a MUCH harder job (huge props to all of ya out there doing it) and I am pretty sure that if I open the first book, I will not look back up until my kids are asking if it is ok to run with the scissors. But the stack of pretty books are calling my name.

If you see me here next week with a vampire kit, you will know I made it through! Anyone else want to share your opinion on the series?

Thursday Treats

So have you been into our store at ScrapStreet and helped yourself to our free kit for October?

This is it and we have been having fun with it, go check out the CAT gallery and the contest gallery HoHo Down!

So as a treat for you this week I have some matching alphas for you.. not 1 but 3!! They are all lowercase a to z with numbers 0 to 9. I shall do the uppercase and punctuation sometime this month!

I may also have another spooky treat for you later this month.......

This is the purple version and you can get it here

This is the green one (my favourite) and you can get that here

and the last one complete with Witchypoo's hat is here

I hope you enjoy them and would love to see what you do with the kits... leave a link in the comments to let me know and I may do a little something just for you!

'Not For Coffee' Filters

A few weeks ago on this blog I wrote an article about a great Plug in site, so today to follow that theme I'd like to introduce another great resource site. "Grafnet".

As of this posting Grafnet has over 4192 listings of Photoshop Filters. The author of the website uses the same photo to demonstrate the effects of each particular filter which just makes sense! In addition Grafnet makes it easy to locate and contact the designers of the filters with clickable links.

New finds for your favorite filters are listed in the upper right hand side of the website and the filter index is in alphabetical order. The author asks that if you discovers a new filter not listed on his website to please contact him. This keeps the list current and ever expanding. There's an easy Contact form on the site to do so.

Filters and plug ins are fantastic tools to integrate into your scrap booking projects. Try them on photos, papers, elements or make something from scratch. The sky's the limit when it comes to the thousands of filters available.
