Shadowboxing

I've had shadowboxes on the brain! Last Christmas, I saw the cutest house-shaped countdown-to-Christmas shadow box and ever since I've had an itch to alter a shadow box. I even have an idea for an end-of-the-year small shadowbox for the kids' teachers - I was thinking: build the box, stain the wood and fill with fun things like beans, alphabet pasta, school buttons and other small items.

However, right now altering or building an entire box is not in the works, so I decided to strive for it on a scrapbooking page. You've seen the framed, pop-out photos, right? I planned on rolling back the edges on every photo, but decided just to do my favorites instead since so many photos ended up on the page.

Technique: super easy!

  1. Mat the photo.
  2. Cut a piece of paper about 1/8th to 1/4 inch larger than the photo.
  3. Cut an 'X' from the center of the cut paper toward the corners, not cutting the 1/8th inch border.
  4. Roll, cut, tear, crinkle, bend or otherwise manipulate the triangles out toward the border of the photo.
  5. This should create a window or shadow box effect for your photo.
  6. Works on paper corners, too!
Enjoy - can't wait to see what peeks through your shadows!

**extra! extra!**
in case you want it in sketch form!

Saturday Challenge: 10/2

Happy October!

I am a part time rural mail carrier. My favorite part of the job is getting to see all of the different front yards and porches. What...is that weird? Well, maybe. But it's true. When I drive up to a mailbox and see a beautiful flower garden, it just brightens up my day. When I walk up to a door to deliver a package, I pay attention to the landscaping and the way the front porch is decorated. They all have their own special vibe to them. Some are fun. Some are elegant. Some are comfortable and welcoming. So many different personalities shining through. I just find it all very interesting.

I especially enjoy it when they change with the seasons. Today I saw lots of fun Halloween decorations. I saw corn husk bouquets tied up with ribbons. I saw pumpkins of every size and shape. And I saw so many mums in festive fall colors.

But the house that really caught my attention? It had a big pink ribbon tied around the mailbox. And a sign in the yard that said: "remember...October is all about the pink!"

In honor of October being National Breast Cancer awareness month...let's see some PINK in your scrappy projects this week.
