Shadowboxing

I've had shadowboxes on the brain! Last Christmas, I saw the cutest house-shaped countdown-to-Christmas shadow box and ever since I've had an itch to alter a shadow box. I even have an idea for an end-of-the-year small shadowbox for the kids' teachers - I was thinking: build the box, stain the wood and fill with fun things like beans, alphabet pasta, school buttons and other small items.

However, right now altering or building an entire box is not in the works, so I decided to strive for it on a scrapbooking page. You've seen the framed, pop-out photos, right? I planned on rolling back the edges on every photo, but decided just to do my favorites instead since so many photos ended up on the page.

Technique: super easy!

  1. Mat the photo.
  2. Cut a piece of paper about 1/8th to 1/4 inch larger than the photo.
  3. Cut an 'X' from the center of the cut paper toward the corners, not cutting the 1/8th inch border.
  4. Roll, cut, tear, crinkle, bend or otherwise manipulate the triangles out toward the border of the photo.
  5. This should create a window or shadow box effect for your photo.
  6. Works on paper corners, too!
Enjoy - can't wait to see what peeks through your shadows!

**extra! extra!**
in case you want it in sketch form!

Symmetry & Me

I find it downright silly that even when I get the chance to create one scrapbook page for myself, I still feel the need to be challenged. If I can't find a challenge online to fit what I want to work with, then I end up challenging myself. This page was no different! It was the first page in a long, long time that I created for myself, by myself. You'd think that would be fun and relaxing, right? Well, it was - that and challenging! For some reason, I challenged myself to a symmetrical page. Maybe it's because I'm striving for balance these busy May days? I don't know about that, but nothing is ever symmetrical in my life - not my scrapbook pages, rarely my photography, not the interior design of my house; maybe only that I have to chew m&ms equally & symmetrically (2 greens, one for each side... a red and a brown and a red and a brown... don't ask!) Too much information? Perhaps. =)
So I cut and adhered away at my best attempt at a symmetrical page. Lots of strips and a few buttons as well. I did cheat a little on the photograph I used. Couldn't be that predictable. I hope you enjoy and go for some symmetry in your next page. (If you do, please comment and link!) Being so in balance actually created a whole bunch of new scrapping ideas... maybe I'll have a few new symmetrical ideas for you in a few days!
Blessings!

Wednesday Inspiration - it's apple pickin' season!

One of my favorite times (and photos) of the year, for sure! Since I'm not sure we're going to get to go this year, I'm considering taking the kids and husband to the grocery store and taking pictures of them "picking" apples out of the bins. What? I gotta have my Autumn apple pics!

Gonna have to get a little fruity... searching for specifics 'apple digital' brings up too many computers and Jennifer Apples! Even FRUIT brings up a few designers - this week harder than I thought!

Wednesday Inspiration - dizzy about circles

I just love creating with circles - I think circles on any page or creation just make the layout a little more finished. I must have circles on the brain because I'm even looking for a new large circle cutter in my paper scrapbooking world. That's fine, but let's see what we can do with circles in the digi world. Ready for some digital finds? Here we go!
